Judd, the elder half of country music's superstar mother-daughter duo The Judds, spins the lyrics of their hit song into a sentimental picture book about the ripple effect of love and good deeds. Each verse/ stanza speaks of making sacrifices in the name of love ("I'd gladly walk across the desert with no shoes upon my feet./ To share with you the last bite/ of bread I had to eat"); meanwhile, Duranceau (Follow the Moon) depicts pairs of multiracial children performing various kindnesses for each other. A girl shares her sandwich with a boy; that boy helps another boy who has fallen on the playground; the second boy visits a friend in the hospital, and so on. The chain of events shown in Duranceau's creamy, lifelike portraits captures Judd's theme: "Love can build a bridge/ between your heart and mine,/ Love can build a bridge./ Don't you think it's time?" Confusingly, one spread appears to break the continuous link between the children to begin a new succession of kid-to-kid encounters. Judd's call for harmony, respect and responsibility is inarguably worthwhile. That said, Judd's foreword, in which she describes "hunkering down" with her dog to watch a homeless man sleeping on a bench (and never offering him help) is an uncomfortable fit with her text. An audiocassette recording of the song is included. All ages.

The multiethnic, tirelessly cheerful, clean youngsters look stiff and posed. The hope for a peaceful world and love for all is an admirable one, but here its been packaged for sale, not interwoven within a real story. Ken Stilts, her long-time manager, describes Naomi's life as "part Greek tragedy, part soap opera," and he's at least half right. This account in no way approaches the literary quality of even the worst Greek tragedy, but the term soap opera is an apt one. While most autobiographical works are built upon events that are unique and significant, Judd's life story comes across as a rehash of every soap opera ever produced. Mired in unnecessary detail and an overabundance of cliches, this book will probably disappoint even the Judds' most ardent fans. Purchase only according to demand.

About the Author József Tóth began his study of geophysics in Hungary in the early 1950s, but moved to the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands in 1956 following the Hungarian revolution. He later emigrated to Canada, where he joined the Alberta Research Council in 1960. He shifted the paradigm of strata-bound groundwater flow in drainage basins to cross-formational water movement by two ground-breaking papers in 1962 and 1963 before defending his PhD thesis in Utrecht in 1965, and has contributed fundamental concepts and observations to the role of groundwater as a geologic agent. He joined the University of Alberta in Canada as a sessional instructor in 1966 and as a full-time faculty member in 1980. He currently holds the postitions of Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta, and Titular Professor at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary. Professor Tóth has received many awards for his work in hydrogeology, including the first O.E. Meinzer Award from the Geological Society of America in 1965; the 1999 President's Award from the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH); the 2002 Prix R.N. Farvolden Award from the Hydrogeology Division of the Canadian Geotechnical Society; the 2003 M. King Hubbert Science Award of the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) of the USA; and the 2004 C. V. Theis Award of the American Institute of Hydrology.

Rain School is a book that comes directly from my experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer in the African country of Chad. I remember one particular evening now long ago. School was out. The summer rains had come, and in the coolness of the evening, my wife and I decided to take a walk around the town of Kélo, where we were teachers at the local middle school.

Not far from our house, we happened upon the rain-washed ruins of an elementary school. The roof had fallen in. The dirt walls had collapsed, but the mud desks still had some shape to them. Here and there students had bored holes in the sides of their desks for pens or pencils or rulers. Suddenly we realized that come September these ruins would come to life again. Teacher and students would repair the roof and the walls, give the desks a new coat of mud, and, in no time, school would be underway.

We were stunned to think how much we had taken for granted back home. Now decades later, I have decided to write about that school. I wanted to give readers today pause for thought, a moment of appreciation for the school down the street and the men and woman who make education so easily available in our country. Then I drew the pictures. I used the ink-and-pastel style I created for A Chuva de Manga (BrinqueBooks, 2005), a book about mangoes and creativity, which I published in Brazil, and called on that book's main character, a Chadian boy named Tomás, to "tell" us about his first year at school.
